Should a car that is designed, built and sold in the United States be called foreign?
At the Executive Auto Group, we know that “Made in the USA” in the automobile industry is not as clear cut as it once was. Honda, Nissan and other automobile manufacturers have both design studios and R&D centers in the U.S. The Honda Accord is made of parts in which 70% are produced in the U.S. and the vehicle is assembled here in Ohio.
General Motor’s TV ads show trucks to the tune of This Is Our Country and profess that they’re part of the heartland of America. “Built Ford Tough” may be tough on our economy and GM confused because Ford’s Fusion and GM‘s Chevrolet HHR and Chevy Suburban are all made in Mexico. The Buick LaCrosse was designed in China by Joe Qui, who doesn’t own a car or even have a drivers license. Then there’s Toyota that touts its growing list of U.S. plants, but imports more cars from Japan every year just to meet demand.
When the UAW hands out bags with “Buy American” on them at auto show in Ford‘s booth do they mean buy the Toyota Camry built in Kentucky, the Ford Fusion built in Mexico, or the Dodge Charger built in Canada?
So what makes one car American car and another foreign?
It’s a global industry now and to “Buy American” applies very little to vehicles today. Manufacturers live in a world that is no longer as simple as the USA against Asians or Europeans. Let’s face it, consumers should pick new or used cars in CT based on what vehicle best suits their needs best, not the location of the headquarters where they get their mail delivered.
