Vehicle Battery Care & Replacement

by Mike Hastings on August 9, 2010

One of every 4 vehicles gets a new battery every 4 years. So it will come as no surprise then that the median battery life is approximately 3 1/2 years. If your battery is older than that, do not be surprised if you get stranded in the parking area at work, the shopping mall, or even in your own driveway.

How do you recognize when it’s time to replace your battery? Battery lifespan vary by the the type of vehicle, the geographic area you drive your vehicle in, and your personal driving habits. It would be unreliable to try to estimate a  specific  replacement time, but you can watch for signals that your battery could be coming close to failing.

Some of the most more common battery replacement warning signs:

  • Your starter motor is sluggish when starting the vehicleBattery Charge Indicator
  • Your battery light remains lit up when your engine is going
  • Your battery loses power quicker in cold or drawn-out starts
  • Your headlights dim when the engine is idling
  • The charge indicator on the top of your maintenance-free battery displays yellow or black

During wintertime, the total number of battery failures steps-up four times, thus whenever your battery is older than two years, visit an Executive Auto Center service center.
